Description: Trees for Cities started life in 1993 with the vision to establish a charity that would be highly practical and would work with local communities to get more trees planted and green those areas most in need of greening. The Mizuno Running Series are proud to be supporting our work in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia which is going from strength to strength. In 2005, with Ethiopian charity Gashe Abera Molla, we transformed a disused wasteland, in to a small orchard of banana, lemon and avocado trees. Since then we’ve developed two other partnerships with local NGO’s. In 2009 we will continue to work with our second project partner, the Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society, to plant a further 1,000 fruiting trees with local residents and community groups, bringing the total number planted to 3,000 since the partnership began in 2006. These trees are providing a sustainable and vital source of food and income to families who harvest the plum, apple and pear trees. Our third project partner is the Birhan Integrated Community Development Organisation and at a purpose-built nursery, together we are helping to train local unemployed women in horticulture. Many of the women are single parents, living with HIV. This is a long-term project, which over the next 5 years will lead to 15,000 native, fruiting and endangered tree species being planted throughout the city of Addis Ababa and its surrounding area.
